The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is situated at the edge of the Kibale Forest. Through the raised wooden walkways lies a paradise of birdwatching! The sanctuary is a great example of community-based tourism. Because the funds from the sanctuary flow back to the local community of Uganda and improve access to water management areas.
For lovers of primates and birdwatching – This sanctuary is calling your name to explore its richness!
What’s in the name – The name ‘Bigodi’ comes from the rutooro word ‘Kugodya’ which means walking slowly and tiredly.
The dry months (from December to February and June and July) are the best for visiting the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. The weather is pleasant during this time. And, the birdwatching and hiking experiences are at their best.
Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is 330 km from the capital city of Kampala. And is about a five-hour drive. But, the drive from Fort Portal takes just an hour. Thus, you can combine your Uganda Tour here with safaris to Kibale Forest or further south to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
