Fly from Entebbe to Kasese, Transfer to Kibale NP

On your first day, you will be picked from your accommodation/residence and transferred to Entebbe International Airport by one of our company representatives. At the Airport, you will board your local flight from Entebbe to Kasese AirStrip where you will be met by our Safari guide. Our Safari guide will welcome you from Kasese for the transfer to Kibale Forest National Park. The drive will take around 1 and a half hours. You will pass through traditional villages dotted with all forms of small scale agricultural activity. You will pass through Fort Portal Town which rests on the foothills of the massive Rwenzori mountains ranges. Fort Portal is named after British Consul General of Zanzibar - Sir Gerald Portal - who came to Uganda in 1892 to formalize the protectorate of Uganda under British rule. From Fort Portal will continue to Kibale Forest which is very popular for primates - especially chimpanzees. Kibale has the biggest concentration of Chimps in the whole world - and is, therefore, the best place for research and tourism of Chimpanzees. You should be arriving in Kibale, just in time for lunch. Depending on the time, you could opt for the much-needed rest at the lodge or opt for some nearby activities such as bird watching. You will rest for the night and prepare for your morning adventure into the deep forest to look for Chimpanzees and all the other animals that live in Kibale National Park.

ACCOMMODATION:

Budget: Kibale Forest Camp

Midrange: Crater Safari Lodge

Luxury: Kyaninga Lodge

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2:

Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, Bigodi Wetland

After a restful night, you will have an early breakfast at the lodge and head out for the main activity of the day - tracking chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

After the briefing, you will head into the deep forest with UWA rangers and start your search for the chimpanzees of Kibale. Along the way, you will spot other primate species and many forest bird species. You might also get lucky and spot the African forest elephant. With very old trees, the entire ecosystem of Kibale will greatly fascinate you.

Chimpanzees are so interesting because their DNA is more than 98% similar to that of humans. They are the closest evolutionary species to humans. In Kibale, you will be able to see chimpanzees in their complex social structure - some containing more than 100 individuals.

You get to observe the chimps as they feed, lounge around, socialise and sometimes while they hunt the smaller mammals.

In the afternoon, you will visit Bigodi Wetland sanctuary for a nature walk that involves a lot of birding and primate tracking. In Bigodi you will see various other primates such as monkeys, baboons, mangabeys etc. You will also see birds - most rare and fascinating is the Great Blue Turaco.

Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a community-run and managed eco-tourism and conservation project that was started by the locals of the neighbouring village. Proceeds from tourism go towards improving the livelihoods of the community and well as furthering conservation work.

Day 3:

Kibale to Kasese, Fly to Bwindi Impenetrable

After your morning breakfast, you will leave Kibale and head to Kasese Airstrip for your flight to Bwindi. The drive to Kasese will take around 1 and a half hours.

In Kasese, you will board your next flight to Kisoro Airstrip - which is just near Bwindi and Mgahinga - the two national parks where you can see gorillas in the natural wilderness. From Kisoro, our Safari guide will pick you up for transfer to the lodge where you will stay for the night.

Depending on the time you arrive, you might have some hours in the evening where you get to explore the surrounding areas. Finally, you will rest for the night as you prepare for your gorilla tracking experience in the morning.

Midrange: Engagi Lodge

Luxury: Bwindi Lodge

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4:

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi

You will wake up early in the morning for a warm breakfast before heading to the park headquarters. Since gorilla trekking could very easily take up several hours of the day, you will also carry packed lunch and drinking water.

You will reach the park headquarters by 7:00 AM and receive a briefing by the Uganda Wildlife Authority personnel. Your gorilla permits will be checked and groups of 8 shall be assigned a gorilla family to track that day. An armed UWA ranger/guide will lead you through the whole hike as you go to see the mountain gorillas.

During the hike, you find that hills are steep and the vegetation very thick with massive undergrowth. Along the way, you will see various other animals especially monkeys. You will also spot some birds and colourful butterflies. If you are very lucky, you will see an African forest elephant and a golden cat. These hard to spot.

After reaching the gorillas, you will stay at least 7 metres away from the gorillas and sit around and observe them as they go about their very normal day.

The tracking can take as short of a time as 1 hour, or as long as 6 hours. This is because the gorillas are free to roam the entire forest as they wish. Gorilla tracking rarely takes the long extremes of time, but the possibility can't be overlooked. That is why the packed lunch is always a good idea.
