What's included
Sometimes you will hear Mabamba referred to as the shoebill sanctuary. This is because it is the easiest place where you can spot many shoebill storks as they enjoy their natural habitat.
The Mabamba bay is a unique and extensive marsh that stretches along the narrow bay – fringed with papyrus towards the main water body that is Lake Victoria. It is located west of Entebbe International Airport and lies between Busi Island and Buwaya village on the mainland.
Avid birders and non-birders alike, all enjoy the rare sighting of the shoebill. Being in a place which is habitat to many more birds, A trip for the shoebill definitely includes many extra and unexpected special items.
- Day Trip:
Transfer, Visit Mabamba Swamp and back
In the morning, your driver will pick you up from your hotel or place of accommodation for a drive to Mabamba. The drive will take about an hour via the Nakawuka - Kasanje road.
You will then join the local (on ground) expert in a traditional canoe and traverse the wetland in search for this rarest of birds. You will be able to see various shoebill storks. Some will be actively hunting the fishes of the swamp - which is a sight to behold. Others will be spotted standing still or walking at a very slow pace - which looks like some zen meditative state.
Mabamba Swamp is so much more. You don't just see the shoebill and call it a day. There are other rare African bird species such as the Malachite Kingfisher, Swamp Flycatchers, African Purple Swamphen, African Water Rail, Common Moorhen, Lesser Jacana, African Pygmy Goose, White-faced whistling duck, Squacco Heron, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, African Jacana, and Saddle-billed Stork, among others.
